Noah, a drag queen, is working a drag breakfast in WeHo. Their friend Violet is there too. After work, Violet invites Noah to a party but Noah initially declines, saying their drag mother Chase got them a gig opening for a famous drag queen. Violet makes fun of the job and, using a vape of THC, convinces Noah to go to the party, promising to make them leave in time for the show. Later, Chase is at the show and Noah doesn’t arrive; Chase goes on instead.
That night at the party, Violet approaches Noah with drugs. As Violet injects Noah — Noah seizes. Violet and friends dump an OD’ing Noah at the ER. The staff takes Noah in and treats them. Noah wakes and Chase is there. He lets Noah know he called their mother Jane, who is on the way. He convinces Noah to go home with Jane for a little while and rest.
In North Carolina, Ethan works late in his office at the university where he is a religious-studies professor. The dean enters and they chat. Ethan gets a phone call that his father had an accident and is in the hospital. Ethan grabs his things and heads home. As Noah and his mother travel, they discuss his abusive father. At a diner they are accosted by a bigot who objects to Noah’s gayness. A fight ensues and Noah kicks the man in the crotch after he shoves Jane to the floor. Noah berates Jane for apologizing to the family and says she is stealing his voice whenever she makes him hide who he is. She argues that they will kill him.
Ethan visits his father Jesse in the hospital and Jesse asks him to check on Jane. Noah and Ethan first meet at the family farm and exchange flirty/stoic words. That evening, Noah is drunk at the club dancing when he is accosted by an aggressive man; Ethan happens to be at the same club on a date and rescues Noah from the bathroom. Ethan takes Noah to his Airbnb. Noah hits on Ethan, who rebuffs his advance and explains he is just making sure Noah is safe. Noah passes out.
The next morning Noah finds Ethan’s wedding album; the conversation turns into a sparring match. Jesse later tells Ethan he likes Noah; Jane tells Noah to take it easy on Ethan as he is still getting over his divorce. At a local diner Noah and Ethan are cold to one another. A local bully bashes Noah; Noah and Ethan get up to leave. Noah follows Ethan to his truck. Jesse finally admits he loves Jane and takes her out to a romantic picnic.
Ethan reluctantly takes Noah to his house, where Noah explores a box of statues and Ethan explains them. Noah says his drag is sacred and drags Ethan to his house so he can see Noah put on drag. In Noah’s room they dress in drag; Ethan confesses he is attracted to Noah and they end up in bed together. In the morning Noah downs a mini bottle of whiskey. Ethan freaks out and leaves, telling Noah he can’t do any more party boys and that they both need therapy. He tells Noah that the Buddha didn’t find enlightenment until he sat under a tree and faced the lies in his life until there was only truth. Noah yells after him to come out of the closet and buy a Pride shirt.
Noah goes out to the barn to talk to their mother. They are very upset and while crying blurts out that their father molested them. Jane goes for a rifle to shoot her ex; they fight over the gun and she has a heart attack. At the hospital, Jane says she always wanted to be made up like Noah, who was so beautiful. Noah does Jane up and they have a bonding moment. Noah shows Jane her face in a metal bedpan; she is pleased. The next morning, Jane is dead.
At Jane’s funeral, Ethan shows up as well as Chase. Ethan finally takes Noah upstairs to rest. Noah throws themselves at Ethan, who says Noah needs to heal first. Ethan leaves and sends up Chase who comforts Noah. Noah closes the farm, asks Paolo to run it, and returns home to LA. At another party with Violet, Noah finally realizes this is not where they need to be, tells Violet off, and leaves.
We see Noah going to therapy, getting healthy and being sober. Ethan joins the Pride Group at university and comes out to everyone, as well as getting his therapy. One day, Noah is in the park and sees a fig tree on a hill. They go and sit under it. They look at Ethan’s phone number in their phone and call. Ethan picks up and they hang up without speaking. Noah goes to North Carolina to Ethan’s school. They go into the class and ask Ethan what religion says about forgiveness. The class chimes in and Ethan finally tells Noah there is nothing to forgive. They kiss, finally together.
